When I picked up Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins, I basically knew two main things about it:
1) It was written by Rachel Hawkins.
That in itself was a good enough reason for me to buy this book in my opinion, as I am a huge fan of her previous books. I loved, loved, loved the Hex Hall series, and I'm still beyond disappointed that the spin off series. School Spirits, has so far not had more than the one book.
2) It is about a girl from the south, who although is prim and proper, also becomes a Paladin.
Now when I first heard this book was going to be a book with a bit of a paranormal or fantasy twist, but whose main character was going to be a southern type debutante, I literally freaked out.
To anyone who's not aware, I have a slight obsession with the Southern States, that often drives my husband bonkers. I love hearing about cotillions, and debutante balls, and even sororities, as none of those are found anywhere around where we live.
From those two points, I had a feeling I was going to fall completely in love with this book, and let's just say that I was not disappointed.

Rebel Belle was a book that I fell in love with right from the start. I found the main character, Harper Price to be downright adorable, and I was cheering for her right from the first chapter. I loved how even though she was accused by others as trying too hard to be perfect, and not real enough, I found it endearing how much it meant to her to make her family proud, and continue on with her family's traditions.
That being said, I also loved the extra depth added to the character with the supernatural twist of Harper accidently inheriting the Paladin legacy. The reader really sees her character rise up to the challenge, and really find her true self along the way.
As a bit of a mini spoiler, I had heard ahead of a time that this book included a tiny bit of a love triangle, which I am often not a huge fan of, but I really loved the way that it was handled in this book. Rachel Hawkins wrote it beautifully, and I wasn't left feeling upset or cheated by how it was resolved.
I also really enjoyed the history that follows the fantasy or paranormal twist in this book, as it really felt like it was something the author had planned out thoroughly before writing it into her book.
Lastly, I completely loved the chemistry between Harper and the male main character, David Stark. Many of their scenes made me outright laugh out loud, and the humor between them was just a great addition to the overall story.
I absolutely cannot wait to read the next books in the series, and will hopefully be doing so really soon.
I give this book five out of five stars and highly recommend it to anyone who either enjoys YA contemporaries, or YA fantasy novels, as I think it could really fit in either genre.
My favorite quote: "I never curse out loud, not even in private. It's just not ladylike." Stated by Harper near the front on the book. This quote made me laugh out loud, and I completely love it as I've always had a similar opinion on cursing, and have been teased by it relentlessly by my friends.
