When Twilight Breaks by Sarah Sundin Review

 Happy Friday Friends :)

I hope you're all having a great week, and I want to thank you for joining me (Kirby) here on The Preppy Book Princess for another book review.

I've been reading a lot of historical fiction lately, and I recently finished an amazing book by Sarah Sundin that I can't wait to tell you all about.

When Twilight Breaks by Sarah Sundin:

Source: Publisher as Part of the Revell Reads Blogger Program

Publisher: Revell

Publication Date: February 2nd, 2021

Genre: Christian Fiction/Historical Fiction

Synopsis:

Munich, 1938. Evelyn Brand is an American foreign correspondent as determined to prove her worth in a male-dominated profession as she is to expose the growing tyranny in Nazi Germany. To do so, she must walk a thin line. If she offends the government, she could be expelled from the country--or worse. If she fails to truthfully report on major stories, she'll never be able to give a voice to the oppressed--and wake up the folks back home.

In another part of the city, American graduate student Peter Lang is working on his PhD in German. Disillusioned with the chaos in the world due to the Great Depression, he is impressed with the prosperity and order of German society. But when the brutality of the regime hits close, he discovers a far better way to use his contacts within the Nazi party--to feed information to the shrewd reporter he can't get off his mind.

This electric standalone novel from fan-favorite Sarah Sundin puts you right at the intersection of pulse-pounding suspense and heart-stopping romance.

My Review:

When Twilight Breaks is an enthralling and beautifully written World War Two novel from one of the genre's best. I've come to appreciate the fact that every time I pick up a Sarah Sundin novel, I end up learning something new about history, and it was interesting to read about this time period in history from the perspective of Americans living in Germany seeing the horrors of everything first hand.

Evelyn is a foreign correspondent, trying to make her way in a male dominated industry. Unable to stay silent amidst the persecution and prejudices she's witnessing every single day, she's determined to use her articles to represent both sides of the situations. Unfortunately, telling the truth isn't popular among the Nazi's, and Evelyn soon finds herself making enemies of very powerful players. When she meets Peter Lang, an American graduate student working on his PHD in German studies, she's shocked to see his attitude towards everything going on around him. However, Peter's eyes are soon opened to the truth, and soon finds himself in a dangerous situation trying to fight for what's right in a period where doing so could mean the end of your life. When Evelyn discovers a shocking secret about her past, Peter is the only person she can trust as sinister plots become even more sinister and life more dangerous around every corner.

As Peter and Evelyn fight to make a difference, and get back to their homeland safely; the reader will be on the edge of their seat as suspense and shocking twists and turns exist at every corner. As the two work together, their friendship is strengthened and feelings begin to emerge, but both have dark skeletons hiding that need to be dealt with before they can truly move forward into something more.

Sarah Sundin has once again written a heart pounding, keep the reader glued to the pages World War Two novel with well rounded characters, a plot that keeps the reader guessing, and a slow burn romance. As with all of her books, I appreciated how much time and energy went into the research surrounding this one, and I loved learning more about World War Two as I read along.

While I've loved every one of her novels I've ever read, and this one was no exception, I did have a couple of issues that kept this one from being a five star read for me.

First, I've always loved how strong the faith element is in each and every one of her novels, and while Evelyn and Peter both have faith, and God is mentioned many times, He never seemed to be their main focus, and I never felt that moment occurred where they truly learned to let go and let God.

Secondly, the chemistry and attraction between Evelyn and Peter gets really steamy at certain parts of the novel, and I personally felt it went way overboard. I could have done without a lot of it, and found myself uncomfortable reading about some of their encounters.

Overall though, I still loved this one and will definitely be recommending it. I look forward to Sarah's next novel, and hope to get to reading more of her earlier releases that I've yet to get to really soon.

Final Rating: 4/5.

Thanks so much to Revell for allowing me to read and review this!

I voluntarily read and reviewed a complimentary copy of this novel from the publisher (Revell) as part of the Revell Reads Blogger Program. I was not required to give a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Thanks for reading guys! Have a great weekend :)
