I hope you're all doing well, and I want to thank you all for joining me today on The Preppy Book Princess.
Today's such a beautiful day where we live and we're getting ready to take our boat out to the lake. I'm looking so forward to being on the water, and curling up in my favorite seat with a good book.
Before we head out though, I wanted to make good and sure to get my blog post up for all of you guys!
I always enjoy getting to see a movie based off of a book, and comparing what changes got made when the book was adapted for the screen.
Recently I finished Annalisa Daughety's Love Finds You In Charm Ohio, and after watching the movie I thought it would be fun to do a comparison review of the two for you all today.
Let's start with the book:
Love Finds You In Charm Ohio is a heart warming, Amish fiction novel about discovering the life you're meant to live, and trusting God to provide the right path to follow. Emma Miller has been struggling lately when she thinks about the future. She enjoys being a school teacher, and she loves her family dearly, but there's a part of her that longs for something more than the future she's facing within her Amish community. Her sister Abby definitely does not understand these feelings, and has a hard time accepting the fact that Emma could possibly feel this way when she's got the perfect guy right under her nose. When an opportunity arises for Emma to visit her cousin in Charm, Ohio to help out at her quilt store, she jumps at the chance, and soon befriends an Englisher named Kelly, who appears to be struggling with a lot of the same uncertainties that Emma is. What follows is a beautiful tale about friendship, first loves, and trusting our Heavenly Father through all the ups and down, and I thoroughly found myself enjoying this lovely tale.
While I definitely enjoyed Kelly and Emma's story the most, I enjoyed having the bits and pieces included of Abby's, as it really helped pull the whole story together. All three girls are very different, and I enjoyed the various viewpoints to the developing story. I enjoyed the fact that even though Emma is questioning where she belongs, she never questions her faith. Despite everything she's going through, God remains her number one priority, and it showcased a strength within her character to not turn from this. It was also refreshing to see the positive influence that Emma has on Kelly, and while some of Kelly's past decisions do have a negative influence on Emma, overall Kelly's more influenced by Emma's conservative lifestyle than the other way around.
While this was my first time reading a book by Annalisa Daughety, it definitely won't be my last. I loved her well developed characters, the vivid setting, and the many tenderhearted moments that left me with a big smile on my face. And I can't fail to mention just how much I loved the budding relationship between Emma and Noah. It was definitely swoon worthy, and completely clean which is also a big plus in my eyes.
Overall, I really loved this one, and I would highly recommend it.

And now onto the movie:
I want to start off by saying that I really appreciated that UP kept this movie clean, and didn't try and negate the importance of faith to the characters. The characters were all cast really well, and I was quite happy with how the portrayal of the beloved characters from the book were brought to life on the screen. The setting really came alive, and definitely went along with what I'd pictured when I first read the book, and even the little changes to the setting like Lydia Anne owning a vegetable stand instead of a quilt shop really didn't bother me.
However, I definitely didn't enjoy the movie as much as the book and that was because of a few factors. First off, I really disliked the fact that the movie really only focused on Emma's story. While I loved Emma's story in the book, and probably would have considered her my favorite character, I really did enjoy the chapters about Kelly and Abby too, and it didn't feel as interesting having them both more as side characters than the main focus. As well, I didn't enjoy how much Emma strays from her faith and lifestyle in the movie, when this really didn't happen to that much degree in the book. Lastly, I wasn't terribly happy with how the movie wrapped up, and I wish they'd done it the same way the book wrapped up as I felt it gave a better finale to all three girls, rather than just to Emma like the movie does.
All in all, I applaud UP for adapting such a lovely faith based novel for their channel, and I enjoyed that they kept it completely clean. I only wish they perhaps hadn't taken quite so many liberties with the plot.
