Sustaining Faith by Janette Oke and Laurel Oke Logan Review

 Hello Friends :)

I pray today finds you all doing well, and I want to thank you all for joining me for another book review here on The Preppy Book Princess.

I've been a little more quiet than usual on social media the last couple of weeks, and that's mainly because my family has been going through a lot. I've been trying to stay focused on Him throughout everything, and have needed just a little step away from all of my socials.

Other than bible study, prayer and praise and worship, one of my favorite ways to stay motivated through darker times is to read Christian fiction books. I love reading about characters going through a journey of faith, and I'm excited to share today's review with you all.

For today's review, I'm going to be sharing all about Janette Oke and Laurel Oke Logan's most recent release. Janette Oke is such a nostalgic author for me, as she was literally one of the first authors I started reading when I first starting picking up adult books.

Keep reading to find out what I thought about her newest release.

Sustaining Faith by Janette Oke and Laurel Oke Logan:

Source: Libby App

Publisher: Bethany House

Publication Date: June 1st, 2021

Genre: Christian Fiction/Historical Fiction

Series: When Hope Calls

Synopsis:

So much has been accomplished. Lillian Walsh has stepped out courageously beyond what she'd ever dreamed of being able to achieve. She and her newly rediscovered sister, Grace, have settled three children from England into new Canadian homes and are prepared to place two more just after the New Year, when it happens--another painful disruption.

A white lie the sisters used to protect some orphans has resulted in an official complaint and a letter revoking the sisters' permission to manage their little children's home. And unexpectedly, Walter, the young man who has won Lillian's heart, departs for a job in the oil industry without leaving any hope for their future, making her confused and lonely.

With more children on their way from England needing caring homes, Lillian and Grace must use every ounce of gumption to keep their mission alive. But when startling information about the past surfaces and a new arrival comes via suspicious circumstances, they'll have to decide what is worth fighting for and what is better left in God's hands.

Review:

Janette Oke was one of the very first "adult" authors I ever read, and she's always been a personal favorite. Surprisingly though, I haven't actually read any of her new releases in quite awhile. I wanted to change that fact, and I was intrigued by both the synopsis of this one, and the beautiful cover. However, I didn't realize this was book two of the series when I picked it up, but I don't think I missed out on too much reading this one first, as a lot of the plot from the first one is summarized throughout this one.

I have to be honest and state that this one wasn't quite what I was expecting. I absolutely loved the focus on the foster/adoption part of the story, and the reader can tell that the authors went to great lengths to make sure all the information about the British Home Children was represented realistically and truthfully. That part of the story definitely kept me engaged, and Freddie and Janie in particular really stole the story for me.

However, the rest of the story honestly fell a little bit flat. I felt like it dragged, and that not much truly happened from start to finish. I really adored Ben, and the lengths he goes to make sure all the children in his care are well protected and provided for, but he was the only adult character I really ended up liking. Lillian and Grace both had potential, but they make such silly decisions and so much heartache comes from them simply not communicating in the way they should have.

It kind of felt like this entire story could have been resolved easily within this one, but instead it was like the authors were trying to drag everything out in order to have another book in the series, and I'm not personally a fan of that type of writing style.

I'm glad I gave this one a chance, and I may still read additional books in the series if there ends up being more, but I don't foresee myself ever rereading this one, and I'm not invested enough to go back and read the first book.

Final Rating: 3/5.

Thanks so much for reading guys! Have a great rest of your day :)

Happy Monday Friends :) I pray today finds you all doing well, and I'm so thankful you decided to stop by my little corner of the internet. My husband and I actually have this week off of work for a much needed holiday, and I'm excited for the many fun things we have planned. I also hope to have lots of time to curl up with some great reads, and I recently had a chance to read one of my most anticipated 2023 releases! Earlier in the year, I read my first novel by Susannah B. Lewis, and I couldn't have loved it more. It was definitely one of my favorite reads of this entire year, and I've been looking forward to reading her next release ever since.
