My Review:
I didn't actually read the first book in the Hanger's Horsemen series, but I couldn't wait to dive into this one. Karen Witemeyer is one of my all time favorites, and I love how she continues to be an author I can rely on to write clean, faith based fiction that keeps Jesus at the heart of the story.
The Heart's Charge is a dual romance story full of diverse characters, hope and grace, and a mystery that keeps the reader engaged right through the final pages. I ended up loving all four of the main characters, and I really enjoyed how both of the romances are different, yet equally interesting and entertaining to the reader. Katherine and Mark's is a second chance romance, with a touch of scandal in their past, and I loved how the author used that to demonstrate how much that incident changed them, especially in regard to how much their faith was strengthened along the way. Jonah and Eliza have had to fight harder than anyone to make their way in this world, and both are hesitant to open up and trust someone, but if they can only find the strength and trust to do so, God may just have amazing things in store for them both.
As the romances start to develop, tragedy is occurring within the community, and these four will stop at nothing to stand up for children who have been failed so many times by those who should have been protecting them. The story reminds us all of the importance of faith, family and friends, and stays pretty clean throughout, which I definitely appreciated.
My only complaints were that I thought the ending wrapped up too quickly, and I would have liked a little bit more resolution than there was. However, I still loved it, and can't wait to go back and read the first book in the series, hopefully very soon.
