Hello all my fellow readers :)
Back in February, I did a review on The Naturals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes, which I really liked, and now I'm here to review another book I recently finished by her, Raised By Wolves.
This was another book that's been on my TBR list for quite sometime, but since I've been on a book buying ban, I hadn't picked it up yet. I decided to go ahead and borrow it from the library instead, and I'm really glad I took a chance on reading this book as I honestly really liked it, and it was a lot different novel than I was originally expecting.
For anyone unfamiliar with this novel and/or it's plot line, here is the synopsis from goodreads:
"Adopted by the Alpha of a werewolf pack after a rogue wolf brutally killed her parents right before her eyes, fifteen-year-old Bryn knows only pack life, and the rigid social hierarchy that controls it. That doesn't mean that she's averse to breaking a rule or two.
But when her curiosity gets the better of her and she discovers Chase, a new teen locked in a cage in her guardian's basement, and witnesses him turn into a wolf before her eyes, the horrific memories of her parents' murders return. Bryn becomes obsessed with getting her questions answered, and Chase is the only one who can provide the information she needs.
But in her drive to find the truth, will Bryn push too far beyond the constraints of the pack, forcing her to leave behind her friends, her family, and the identity that she's shaped?"
I went into this book expecting a paranormal romance, with a bit of a dark setting around it, which I was really excited about reading since I love paranormal romances, but this book was so different than I was expecting, and still managed to leave me intrigued and holding on to each word, anxious to find out what happened next. Bryn was not your typical helpless, human being guarded by a pack of werewolves, she was a strong, kick butt protagonist who set out from the beginning to prove she could be more than anyone expected from her. She was an oddity right from the start, being the only non-mate human allowed within pack boundaries, but she set out to make a place for herself above and beyond what anyone else expected.
I was really surprised by the way Jennifer Lynn Barnes wrote the relationship between Bryn and the new werewolf she meets, Chase, as secondary to the rest of the story. As much as I love reading paranormal romances, it was a refreshing change to see that the "romance" in this book was not the focal point, as the reader can clearly see that Bryn is more focused on solving the questions from her past, and relying on the strong friendships she's made to help her do so. While Chase was definitely an important part of the story, so were Bryn's other friends, Lake and Devon, and the four of them together were an integral part of the story.
I was also completely unprepared for the direction this book was going to take. From the synopsis, I knew that Chase was somehow going to help Bryn finally understand her past, but I personally was not prepared at all for the way in which this would play out, and Jennifer Lynn Barnes definitely had me guessing right until the end. This is probably one of the most unique werewolf novels I've ever read, and I would definitely recommend giving this one a try, especially if you're not a fan of paranormal romances, as that was definitely not what this was in my opinion. I gave it four out of five stars, and I'm looking forward to continuing on with this series :)
My favorite quote: "Some people could see the future. Some people could loosen other people's lips just by looking at them. and me? I was scrappy. Lucky me."
Thanks for reading everyone. I will see you all in my next post.
