Book Review: The Unexpected Everything By Morgan Matson

Hey everyone,

I hope you all had a fabulous weekend, and that your week is off to a great start.

I had mentioned on Friday that I was taking my nephew to a local festival over the weekend, and I can honestly say this was such a fun time as he absolutely loved it.

Our community puts on a huge kite festival each year, and it's the biggest of its kind in North America. Its become a tradition for my nephew and I to attend together each year, and this year my parents (mom and stepdad), came with us as well. It was a really fun way to spend part of the weekend, but I was also able to get in some quality reading time, and I'm here today to talk about one of the amazing books I recently finished, The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson.

Morgan Matson is one of my all time favorite contemporary authors, and I've come to expect great things every time I pick up a book written by her. I had first heard about this near the start of this year, and I've been anxiously awaiting it ever since, and let me tell you that it definitely did not disappoint. I'm getting ahead of myself however, and here's my review.

Synopsis: Andie had it all planned out. When you are a politician's daughter who's pretty much raised herself, you learn everything can be planned or spun, or both. Especially your future.

Important internship? Check.

Amazing Friends? Check.

Guys? Check (as long as we're talking no more than three weeks).

But that was before the scandal. Before having the be in the same house with her dad. Before walking an insane number of dogs. That was before Clark and those few months that might change her whole life.

Because here's the thing-if everything's planned out, you can never find the unexpected. And where's the fun in that? (From goodreads).

Review: I have mentioned many times before on my blog just how much I loved Second Chance Summer and Amy and Roger's Epic Detour, and while I did still love Since You've Been Gone, I just didn't love it quite as much as the previous two. However, The Unexpected Everything completely blew away all  my expectations, and is honestly one of the best contemporaries I've read in a long time. I really felt for Andie throughout the whole book, and the expectations she's always had for herself, mainly because of growing up in the public eye thanks to her dad's political aspirations. Morgan Matson has once again created an amazing story about friendship, family, love, and taking a chance on the unexpected, and I came out of this book honestly not being able to wait until I have the chance to reread it.

Plot: I really found the whole plot workable this time. I honestly didn't have any complaints with the plot as a whole, and I thought it continued to flow really well throughout the entire story. I always feel with Morgan's books that you can tell just how much effort she puts into creating her settings and characters and story lines, and I was definitely not disappointed with the direction this novel took.

Characters: Andie and Clark were both extremely likable characters, especially with their endearing insecurities, and their relationship with each other and their friends throughout the novel. I really also loved the quirky cast of supporting characters that makes up Andie's group of friends, who soon also adopt Clark quite willingly into their folds.

Romance: If I was going to sum up Andie and Clark's relationship in one word, it would honestly be adorable. Not only did I love their whole relationship, but I also found it honest and believable, and that's not always the case for me with the romance element. It definitely didn't feel like insta love which everyone knows I hate, and I enjoyed getting to reread over some of their up and downs throughout the novel just because I couldn't get enough of this couple.

Cover: I'm not what anyone would ever call a dog person, but oh my goodness this cover is plain gorgeous. It perfectly sums up Andie's character, and is a gorgeous portrayal of some of the most endearing moments of this book.

In conclusion, I loved this book from start to finish, and Morgan Matson has once again blown me away with an amazing contemporary story about a girl learning to find herself, and discovering along the way that some of life's best kept secrets happen when you least expect it. My rating for this book is five out of five stars and I highly recommend giving it a try if you're a fan of YA contemporary or if you've been a fan of Morgan's last books.

Thanks for reading everyone, and I'll see you all back here on Wednesday. ;)
