The Start of Something Big by Sunni Jeffers:

Source: Library

Publisher: Guidepost Books

Publication Date: March 1st, 2009

Genre: Christian Fiction/Small Town Series

Series: Tales from Grace Chapel Inn

Synopsis:

About the Tales from Grace Chapel Inn series: Once readers visit the charming village of Acorn Hill, they'll never want to leave. Three sisters -- Louise, a widow from Philadelphia; Alice, an unmarried nurse who lived with her father; and Jane, a divorced chef from San Francisco -- reunite in the sleepy town after their father's death and turn the family home into a charming bed-and-breakfast. Here the sisters rekindle old memories, rediscover their childhood bonds, revel in the blessings of friendship, and meet fascinating guests along the way.

It's the beginning of summer, and Acorn Hill is buzzing. Alice is heading to the big city with her ANGELs, if only she can find a willing chaperone. Aunt Ethel is busy revamping her home for a visit from her daughter Francine and when a Do-It-Yourself Warehouse opens in nearby Potterston, Jane takes it upon herself to save the local store, Fred's Hardware. In the process, she strikes up a friendship with the manager of the local superstore, and struggles between loyalty to her friends and loyalty to her own heart. Could this new relationship be the start of something big?

My Review:

I always enjoy a visit back to Acorn Hill, and surprisingly, this sweet title ended up being my favorite of the series so far. Sunni Jeffers is a new to me author, and she wrote her story a little different than the other authors in the series have so far. This one focused less on the guests of the bed and breakfast, and more on the sisters themselves, and it ended up being a refreshing change.

The reader gets to follow the youngest sister Jane Howard on her quest to help the local hardware store stand up against the new corporate giant store moving into a neighboring city. Unfortunately things don't go as planned when the store manager ends up being nothing like what Jane expected, and soon sparks start to fly between these two new hesitant friends. This storyline was sweet and tender, and gave a good reminder that God always has a plan, even when it doesn't turn out being what we thought it would be.

The second storyline also focused mainly around Jane as she is reluctantly dragged into helping her aunt Ethel prepare for a much anticipated visit from her daughter. As Ethel starts to go overboard, and Jane starts to feel stretched to her limits, both women will learn a valuable lesson about the important of faith and family no matter the obstacles.

The final storyline was my personal favorite, and revolved around the middle sister Alice taking six of her "ANGELS" on a much anticipated trip to New York City. The other chaperone is uneasy about the idea, and needs to learn how to let go and let God in uncertain situations. As New York is a place I've always wanted to visit, I loved getting to read about the excitement these young girls have to visit such a well recognized city, and the kindness of Alice pulling it all together for them.

All in all, I adored this sweet contemporary title, and read the majority of it one sitting. It was truly like a cup of tea on a cold winter's day in terms of comfort, and was the perfect story to pick up as I was going through a bit of a hard situation at the time. I've adored this series overall, and this title has honestly been my favorite of all the ones I've read so far. The writing was engaging, the characters were well developed, and I enjoyed how the plot was a tad different than any of the previous titles.

Final Rating: 5/5.

I truly adored this one, and can't recommend it enough. I look forward to carrying on with more titles in the series shortly.

Thanks so much for reading guys! Have a great rest of your day :)

A confirmed bachelor, George vacillates between irritation and attraction whenever Willow is around--which to him seems like all too often. He's not interested in expanding his horizons or making new friends; it just hurts too much when you lose them. But as the summer progresses, George feels his defenses crumbling. The quest...
