Good morning fellow booklovers :)
I can't believe how long it's been since I last sat down to do a blog post. Unfortunately I've been battling a nasty virus for the last couple of weeks that has literally left me with next to no energy to do anything aside from my regular job, and keeping up with the housework around here. Thankfully I'm finally starting to feel a bit better, and thought it was long overdue for me to get a few reviews typed up of the lovely books I've finished in the last few weeks. I guess that is one positive for being under the weather, I had plenty of time to catch up on my TBR pile!
Today's review is extremely exciting for me. If anyone were to ask me for my list of favorite authors, it might be a long and winded list that would be ever changing with all the new and amazing authors I discover along the way, but Debbie Macomber would make this list every single tine! Her books are those kind of change into your comfiest pajamas, get a big ol mug of steaming hot chocolate and curl up in your favorite reading space to enjoy a feel good story about an average working family facing troubles and trials and learning to work together to accomplish things. Her Cedar Cove series to this day remains one of my all time favorite series. (I look forward to eventually getting to watch the TV series on dvd as we don't have the Hallmark channel here in Canada). And while I enjoy all of her books, there is just always something special about her Christmas novels, which she generally releases at least one new one a year. Several of her Christmas books have also been made into TV movies on the Hallmark channel, and there also one of my favorite things to curl up with a mug of hot chocolate to.
So with how much in love I am with Debbie Macomber's writing, it should come as no surprise to anyone just how excited I was to learn of her new Christmas book, Dashing Through the Snow, being released on October 6th, 2015. It sounded like such a fun and quirky novel, and I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. Unfortunately for me, my husband has me on a strict book buying ban through Christmas as he did quite a bit of his shopping early and was worried that I would end up buying myself something he had already purchased. And of course, every. single. time. I am on a book buying ban, whether put there by myself or my hubby, is when one of my favorite authors comes out with a new book I'm dying to read. Thank goodness for the local library in this instance! As I was able to still read this novel, without breaking my book buying ban, and after reading it, I can definitely say it has been added to Indigo wish list, as it is a book I could read again and again. Here's my review:
For anyone unfamiliar with the novel, here is the synopsis from goodreads: "Savor the magic of the season with Debbie Macomber’s newest Christmas novel, filled with warmth, humor, the promise of love, and a dash of unexpected adventure.
Ashley Davison, a graduate student in California, desperately wants to spend the holidays with her family in Seattle. Dashiell Sutherland, a former army intelligence officer, has a job interview in Seattle and must arrive by December 23. Though frantic to book a last-minute flight out of San Francisco, both are out of luck: Every flight is full, and there’s only one rental car available. Ashley and Dash reluctantly decide to share the car, but neither anticipates the wild ride ahead.
At first they drive in silence, but forced into close quarters Ashley and Dash can’t help but open up. Not only do they find they have a lot in common, but there’s even a spark of romance in the air. Their feelings catch them off guard—never before has either been so excited about a first meeting. But the two are in for more twists and turns along the way as they rescue a lost puppy, run into petty thieves, and even get caught up in a case of mistaken identity. Though Ashley and Dash may never reach Seattle in time for Christmas, the season is still full of surprises—and their greatest wishes may yet come true."
In Dashing Through the Snow, two strangers find themselves in a unique situation, when neither has the means of travelling to Seattle, Washington they had planned on. For Ashley, going home to Seattle is meant to be a surprise to her mother, as she previously didn't think she would be able to afford to go home for Christmas, and when at the last minute she is able to, it becomes extremely important for her to do so. For Dash, getting to Seattle isn't about the Christmas season, but is rather about an important job interview he is determined to make, despite the bleak situation of flight availability.
On top of flights not being available, the reader is soon also informed that Ashley has been placed on the airport's "no fly list", although this is unknown to Ashley or Dash at the time. With their other options disappearing before them, both have the idea to rent a car. And in the typical fashion of one of Debbie Macomber's humorous novels, there is only one car left to rent at the airport. Unsure what else to do, these two unlikely travel companions, begin a road trip that includes many mishaps along the way. A somewhat complicated rest stop concludes in the addition of a third traveling companion: an adorable new puppy that Ashely names "Little Blade", and is determined to take home to her mother for Christmas since they recently lost their own dog named Pickles.
In typical Debbie Macomber fashion, the reader is included in all the fun and hijinks that occur along the way, including among other things the involvement of the FBI, a disastrous, but hilarious Karaoke competition, and many, many pit stops along the way to Seattle. While I don't want to spoil this book for anyone, I want to go ahead and say that the romance that develops between Ashley and Dash is heartwarming and adorable, and reminds me of her previous Christmas stories involving the angels Shirley, Mercy and Goodness. It was an adorable read, and also a very quick read, so for anyone who's looking for a heartwarming, easy Christmas read to pick up this holiday season. I highly recommend giving this one a go. My overall rating is five stars. and the only complaint I had is that I did wish the romance had been stretched over a little longer, as the two day time period was a little unbelievable, but overall I completely loved this book, and I can't wait to see the movie Hallmark has made out of it, once it airs here in Canada.
My favorite quote: "Her father used to say that snow came from angels scattering dust from the sky."
Thanks for reading everyone, and I will be back very shortly with some more reviews of other books I enjoyed in November. :)
