Happy Wednesday Everyone!
I hope you're all having a great week, and I thank you for joining me today on The Preppy Book Princess 👸
A few weeks ago I saw the trailer for the upcoming movie, Midnight Sun, and I was really intrigued by it. Since it releases next month, and I definitely wanted to read the book before I saw the movie, I took some time this last weekend to read this relatively quick read.
And today I'd like to share with you all what my thoughts were on it.
Midnight Sun by Trish Cook:
Source: Library
Publisher: Poppy
Publication Date: February 6th, 2018
Genre: Young Adult/Contemporary
Synopsis:
A heartbreaking tale of love, loss and one nearly perfect summer - perfect for fans of The Fault In Our Stars and Everything, Everything.
Seventeen-year-old Katie Price has a rare disease that makes exposure to even the smallest amount of sunlight deadly. Confined to her house during the day, her company is limited to her widowed father and her best (okay, only) friend. It isn't until after nightfall that Katie's world opens up, when she takes her guitar to the local train station and plays for the people coming and going.
Charlie Reed is a former all-star athlete at a crossroads in his life - and the boy Katie has secretly admired from afar for years. When he happens upon her playing guitar one night, fate intervenes and the two embark on a star-crossed romance.
As they challenge each other to chase their dreams and fall for each other under the summer night sky, Katie and Charlie form a bond strong enough to change them - and everyone around them - forever.

My Review:
One of the reasons I was initially drawn to this story was because of its focus on XP, as it's a disease I've never seen focused on in a novel before, and I was looking forward to seeing it represented, and learning more about it. From that point, I was hooked on the idea of the romance, and I was really looking forward to seeing where this would lead as the story unfolded.
Katie was a protagonist I both liked and disliked at the same time. She's been dealt some pretty harsh life circumstances, and yet in so many ways she shows a maturity way beyond her years; especially when her biggest concern becomes how her father's coping with her disease, rather than how she herself is. As well, she really goes above and beyond for the people she's close too, and it was inspiring to see such an amazing father/daughter relationship portrayed in a young adult novel, as we all know this is quite often a rare occurrence. On the other hand, she makes some pretty stupid decisions when she begins seeing Charlie, and it was often hard to grasp what she possibly could have been thinking.
XP has been Katie's whole life for as long as she can remember, and the reader could definitely sympathize with her wanting something just for once that's not prohibited by it. However, the decisions she makes have irreversible consequences, and it kind of gave the wrong impression for how serious she was supposed to be about Charlie, if she wasn't truly willing to trust him with that part of her life. Unfortunately, the romance did fall short for me in this one, as it really had an insta-love feel to it. And I think a lot of this was the fact that Katie's grown up infatuated with Charlie Reed, and this definitely carries over when they start dating. They go from a new romance to a serious relationship pretty fast, and it just felt a tad unbelievable.
Overall however, I'm really glad I took the time to read this one as I thought the author did a really amazing job depicting what it's like for a teenager having to deal with an extremely rare disease that has no cure in sight, and in the process, brought some more attention to XP, which is a disease I'm sure not a lot are familiar with. As well, I enjoyed both Katie and Charlie's characters for the most part, as well as Katie's dad and Morgan, and I definitely felt all the heart wrenching moments and found myself tearing up several times throughout. I only wish the romance element had been a little more believable, as it gave the book a bit of a cheesy undertone, which I feel wouldn't have happened if it had been a little more developed. I definitely still recommend it however, it just wasn't quite what I was expecting when I picked it up.
Final Rating: ⭐⭐⭐
Thanks so much for reading guys! I hope you have a great rest of your day :)
