Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream by David Platt Review

 Hello Friends :)

I pray today finds you all doing well, and I'm so thankful you've chosen to take the time to stop by The Preppy Book Princess for another book review.

The last couple of years, I've been trying to dive into reading more Christian non-fiction titles. I want to read more hard hitting stuff that truly causes me to examine my faith, and not just the fluffy devotionals that are so often aimed at women these days.

A book had come on my radar quite a few times that I'd heard both amazing and horrible things about, and I decided it was time to give it a try.

I hope you'll all keep reading down below to find out what I ended up thinking about it.

Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream by David Platt:

Source: Gift From a Friend

Publisher: Multnomah

Publication Date: May 4th, 2010

Genre: Christian Non Fiction/Christian Living

Synopsis:

What is Jesus worth to you?

It's easy for American Christians to forget how Jesus said his followers would actually live, what their new lifestyle would actually look like. They would, he said, leave behind security, money, convenience, even family for him. They would abandon everything for the gospel. They would take up their crosses daily...

But who do you know who lives like that? Do you?

In Radical , David Platt challenges you to consider with an open heart how we have manipulated the gospel to fit our cultural preferences. He shows what Jesus actually said about being his disciple--then invites you to believe and obey what you have heard. And he tells the dramatic story of what is happening as a "successful" suburban church decides to get serious about the gospel according to Jesus.

Finally, he urges you to join in The Radical Experiment--a one-year journey in authentic discipleship that will transform how you live in a world that desperately needs the Good News Jesus came to bring.

My Review:

I've been hearing about this book (both good things and bad) ever since it's release, and I finally decided to give it a go for myself. While I wasn't quite sure what to expect, I can happily say that this book gave me so many things to think  and pray about, and I love how it convicted my heart on a wide variety of topics.

As Christians, we should absolutely be living our lives for Jesus, but I often struggle with knowing exactly what that means. When we hear of fellow brothers and sisters in Christ being persecuted and worse for their faith, it's often made me wonder why I've been so blessed to live in a region where freedom to worship God is a fundamental right. However, this book further illustrated the point that my grandparents and my mother always taught me growing up, and that is the fact that for those of us who have been blessed with much, much is also expected of us. It's easy to be comfortable in a life where we don't have to sacrifice much to live, and this book was a reminder that we have a much greater purpose here on this earth than living for our own means and entitlement. What would our world look like if Christians truly cared for living for Christ above their own personal or societal accomplishments?

Please do yourself a favor and give this book a chance. While I may not have agreed with every single point that David Platt made, I loved his heart for the Lord, and his challenge to truly put Christ first above the "American dream." I love that a pastor is taking the time to challenge the prosperity gospel message, and I loved the hard hitting truth that a Christian's life is never promised to be easy or carefree. We have a lot to learn about what living like Jesus truly means, and I'm glad this book convicted my heart of many things I need to change in my own life.

Final Rating: 4/5.

Thanks so much for reading guys! Have a great rest of your day :)

First Line Friday: Courting Mr. Emerson

Happy Friday Everyone :) Since it is Friday, I'll once again be participating in First Line Friday which is hosted by Hoarding Books .  For this week, I'm going to be sharing the first line from Melody Carlson's newest book, Courting Mr. Emerson. About The Book: When the fun-loving and spontaneous artist Willow West meets buttoned-up, retired English teacher George Emerson, it's not exactly love at first sight. Though she does find the obsessive-compulsive man intriguing. Making it her mission to get him to loosen up and embrace life, she embarks on what seems like a lost cause--and finds herself falling for him in the process. A confirmed bachelor, George vacillates between irritation and attraction whenever Willow is around--which to him seems like all too often. He's not interested in expanding his horizons or making new friends; it just hurts too much when you lose them. But as the summer progresses, George feels his defenses crumbling. The quest...

First Line Friday: The Inheritance

Happy Friday Everyone :) I hope you're all had a great week and that you're staying safe no matter where you are. I haven't been leaving my house much lately other than for work, and because of this, I've had lots of reading time on my hands. Last year my hubby and I took a road trip that included a visit to our favorite bookstore, and we decided to each pick a book that wouldn't be our first choice. The purpose was to try and read something that still interested us, but would maybe be a bit different than what we would typically go for first. My pick ended up being The Inheritance by Michael Phillips, a book I actually ended up being quite excited about, despite never having heard of it prior. Unfortunately, it ended up sitting on my bookshelf ever since, and I'm so thankful I finally got the opportunity to pick it up and start reading it this past week. The Inheritance by Michael Phillips: About the Book: The death of the clan patriarch h...
