Great Expectations by Charles Dickens Review

 Good Morning Sweet Friends :)

I pray today finds you all doing well, and I'm so thankful you've taken the time to drop on by The Preppy Book Princess today for another book review.

I'm Kirby, and I'm excited you've chosen to spend some time with me this morning.

If you're new here, I've been sharing my love of books over here on my little corner of the internet since the fall of 2015, and my favorites are generally Christian fiction, cozy mysteries, mysteries, classics, middle grade, young adult, and clean romances.

It's usually from these particular genres that I share reviews from, and today's is going to be for a classic that I've wanted to read for quite a few years, and finally recently had the chance to do so.

I hope you'll all keep reading down below for today's full review.

Great Expectations by Charles Dickens:

Source: Christmas Gift From My Hubby

Publisher: Oxford University Press (This Edition)

Publication Date: January 1st 1998 (This Edition)

First Published: July 30th, 1860

Genre: Classic Novel

Synopsis:

Great Expectations charts the progress of Pip from childhood through often painful experiences to adulthood, as he moves from the Kent marshes to busy, commercial London, encountering a variety of extraordinary characters ranging from Magwitch, the escaped convict, to Miss Havisham, locked up with her unhappy past and living with her ward, the arrogant, beautiful Estella.

Pip must discover his true self, and his own set of values and priorities. Whether such values allow one to prosper in the complex world of early Victorian England is the major question posed by Great Expectations, one of Dickens's most fascinating, and disturbing, novels.

This edition includes the original, discarded ending, Dickens's brief working notes, and the serial instalments and chapter divisions in different editions. It also uses the definitive Clarendon text.

My Review:

The only Dickens I had read prior to this one was A Christmas Carol, which is one of my all time favorites. I've always been wanting to read more of his work, but was a little hesitant as to whether I'd end up enjoying them or not. I decided to go ahead and give Great Expectations a try as my next experience with one of his stories, as I'd heard nothing but good things about it. I wasn't sure going into it what to expect, but I ended up enjoying this one wholeheartedly. It took me awhile to finish it, but moving through it slowly allowed me to savor the story more, and truly connect with the characters.

While it's part mystery and part romance, there's so much more to the story, and I loved the moral focus on being careful how much we think of ourselves, and the dangers of never being content with what we have. There's also an excellent message of too much change versus not enough change, and how neither in the long run are what any of us truly need.

Overall, I adored this story and would highly recommend it to anyone. Don't hesitate to give this one a try, as it may take a little while to get through, but it's definitely worth giving a try as the story is wonderful and has stood the test of time for many years.

Final Rating: 4/5.

I'm hoping to try Oliver Twist as my next story by Dickens.

Thanks so much for reading guys! Have a great rest of your day :)

My husband and I actually have this week off of work for a much needed holiday, and I'm excited for the many fun things we have planned. Aside from the fun things, I'm honestly thankful to have some extra time to get my house back in shape, and to get more organized for Christmas. I also hope to have lots of time to curl up with some great reads, and I recently had a chance to read one of my most anticipated 2023 releases! Earlier in the year, I read my first novel by Susannah B. Lewis, and I couldn't have loved it more. It was definitely one of my favorite reads of this entire year, and I've been looking forward to reading her next release ever since. Happy Friday Everyone :) Since it is Friday, I'll once again be participating in First Line Friday which is hosted by Hoarding Books .  For this week, I'm going to be sharing the first line from Melody Carlson's newest book, Courting Mr. Emerson. About The Book: When the fun-loving and spontaneous artist Willow West meets buttoned-up, retired English teacher George Emerson, it's not exactly love at first sight. Though she does find the obsessive-compulsive man intriguing. Making it her mission to get him to loosen up and embrace life, she embarks on what seems like a lost cause--and finds herself falling for him in the process. A confirmed bachelor, George vacillates between irritation and attraction whenever Willow is around--which to him seems like all too often. He's not interested in expanding his horizons or making new friends; it just hurts too much when you lose them. But as the summer progresses, George feels his defenses crumbling. The quest...
