Hey Guys,
It's time for another Top 5 Wednesday Post, and, as I'm sure you can tell from the title, this week's topic is "Characters You Defend: Characters You Love, But No One Else Seems Too, So You Are Always Defending Them."
Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly meme created by Lainey, and now hosted by Sam! The group communicates through goodreads, and is open for anyone to join. If you'd like to become part of it, or you're just interested in learning more about it, then please visit the group's goodreads page:

I've found all the May topics so far to be really hard, but also really fun, because it's got me thinking about topics that I normally wouldn't have, like for instance, this week's topic. I had a tough time this week, because it's never fun to admit that some of your favorite characters are definitely disliked by other readers, but I did pick five that I always seem to be defending, and I'm gonna go ahead and talk about each of them now! :)
1) Julian Fineman from Lauren Oliver's Delirium series:
From the very first time Julian was introduced in this series, there was just something about him that I liked. I found his character to be a really intriguing addition, and I much preferred him with Lena over Alex. It's funny though, because after finishing this series, everyone else I know who read it didn't like Lauren Oliver even introducing his character, and were definitely on the Team Alex side of the spectrum. They also all thought Julian was whiny and annoying, and that was definitely not the impression I got from him at all. He's definitely one of my favorite characters from this series, and I've definitely had to defend him multiple times to fellow readers.
2) Edward Cullen from Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series:
I think this one is pretty much a no brainer for me. I personally loved this series, and I loved Bella and Edward's relationship. If you've read my previous posts about Twilight, then you'd know that I had a bit of love/hate relationship with it before I actually read it. Ever since I read it though, it easily became one of my all time favorites, and I've literally read it over and over again. However, I couldn't believe all the hate that exists towards Edward's character. Obviously everyone is going to have differing opinions on books and characters, as that's what makes the world go round, but it was really strange to me just how much hate this particular character gets for being too controlling, and possessive and abusive, and such. I personally, once again, didn't get that impression from his character, and I've defended him over and over again, but once again, he's one of my favorites, and I will continue to be doing so in the future!
3) Sam and Grace from Maggie Stiefvater's Wolves Of Mercy Falls series:
I honestly feel like I could have picked almost any of the characters from this book series to appear on this list. It seems that the whole book community is completely in love with Maggie's Raven Boys series, but most people didn't feel the same love for this series. I personally loved this whole book series overall, and Sam and Grace definitely stand out as one of my favorite YA couples of all time. I have defended them to so many people, who not only disliked the book, but also thought that both Sam and Grace were weak, and uninteresting characters, and I've yet to find anyone who feels the same way about these characters, or this series, that I do! This series, has been one of those cases with me, where I feel like I read a different book from the rest of the world, cause I really don't understand all the hate towards it, but once again, everyone is going to have differing opinions, but I will continue to defend these two awesome characters.
4) Katniss Everdeen from Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games trilogy:
This one might seem like a weird choice, as let's face it, this is one of the most popular YA series of all time, and is loved and adored by most people. However, it's surprising to me just how much many people can't stand Katniss' character, and feel that Peeta and Gale both should have turned their attention elsewhere. I personally loved how Suzanne wrote Katniss as a strong, female heroine, and all the talk about her lack of emotion also doesn't make sense to me, since we do see numerous breaks in Katniss' facade, where you can tell just how much she cares about all the people in her life. Even little things like trying to help out the townspeople by continuing to buy from them, to help them stay afloat, to me showed just how much people actually meant to her, and I definitely don't believe that she was a character who never showed emotion. Katniss remains one of my all time favorite female heroines, and I will also be continuing to defend her in the future as well. :)
5) Princess Eadlyn from Kiera Cass' The Heir and The Crown:
Lastly, I'm going to pick Princess Eadlyn from The Heir by Kiera Cass. I know a lot of people really do not care for her character, and found her cold, standoffish and selfish throughout the book, but I really liked the way Kiera wrote her character. To me, Eadlyn is a girl who's suddenly had the weight of the world thrown on her shoulders, and I think her actions are completely believable as to how an actual young woman would act in these circumstances. I personally have not read The Crown yet, but I will be doing so very soon, as I just bought it this month, but I'm hoping that a lot of readers will change their opinion on her after reading that book. I've once again, defended Eadlyn numerous times to other people, and I guess it definitely goes to show that not every one looks at books and characters the same way. :)
Thanks for reading everyone! I'm definitely looking forward to reading more posts on this topic this week, as I can't wait to see everyone else's differing opinions on this challenging topic! I will see you all back here on Friday when I will finally be posting my RT Booklovers haul!
