Synopsis:

His promise will cost him far more than he imagined.

Guilt has defined Luke Dempsey's life, but it was self-destructiveness that landed him in prison. When his friend and fellow inmate lay dying shortly before Luke's release, the older man revealed he left a string of clues for his daughter, Finley, that will lead her to the treasure he's hidden. Worried that she won't be the only one pursuing the treasure, he gains Luke's promise to protect her until the end of her search.

Spunky and idealistic, Finley Sutherland is the owner of an animal rescue center and a defender of lost causes. She accepts Luke's help on the treasure hunt while secretly planning to help him in return--by coaxing him to embrace the forgiveness he's long denied himself.

As they draw closer to the final clue, their reasons for resisting each other begin to crumble, and Luke realizes his promise will push him to the limit in more ways than one. He'll do his best to shield Finley from unseen threats, but who's going to shield him from losing his heart?

My Review:

I've been waiting to read Luke Dempsey's story ever since his character was first mentioned in Stay With Me, and I was hopeful that this was going to end up being my favorite of the series. I've been a longtime fan of Becky's books, and I ended up being on the waiting list at the library for this one for over five months. I was tempted just to run out and buy it, but I'm honestly so thankful I didn't end up doing so. I'm not sure if this book just wasn't as good as her previous books, or if my reading tastes have just changed, but this one ended up massively disappointing me.

First of all, I couldn't stand Finley's character, and my opinion of her never ended up improving. She was so pushy and demanding, and constantly insisting that she had to have her own way. Forcing someone (Luke) who is hesitant about animals to keep a foster dog for several weeks after he's repeatedly told you he doesn't want to do it is not okay. She should have been willing to listen, instead of constantly assuming that she knew what was best for everyone else. She was described as having a strong faith, but this really didn't seem to fit with the rest of her character, and I was honestly disappointed with how superficial the entire faith element seemed to be throughout the entire story.

The mystery sounded intriguing to begin with, but quickly became implausible and almost laughable, and its wrap up was such a letdown. The resolution of the mystery was the main reason I kept pushing through the story, and it definitely was not what I was expecting or hoping for.

I also have to mention that Becky's writing style felt different throughout this one, and the story didn't seem to flow as effortlessly as her books usually do. I was actually kind of bored throughout sections of this one, and not sure if I even wanted to keep on with it or not.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, the sexualized content of this book was not something I was comfortable with. The reader keeps hearing over and over how strong Finley's faith is, but she seems to see nothing wrong with having lusty make out sessions with someone who is definitely not a Christian, and even jokes around about him not being able to take her to her bedroom. The romance felt lusty and like it was all based around physical attraction, and I was definitely not a fan.

The only things that redeemed this one for me was seeing the rest of the Miracle Five finally find a way to get through to Luke, and the side romance of Ben and Akira. They were downright adorable, and at times I was tempted to skip through Finley's sections and just find the tidbits about them instead.

All in all, this is definitely my least favorite Becky Wade book to date, and I hope it's not a sign of things to come for her future releases.

Final Rating: 3/5.

Thanks so much for reading guys! Have a great rest of your day :)
