Dust by Kara Swanson Review

 Good Morning Bookish Lovelies :)

I pray today finds you all doing well, and I'm so thankful you chose to join me (Kirby) here on The Preppy Book Princess today for another book review.

Back when I still read a lot of secular young adult books, fantasy was one of my favorite genres. I can't begin to describe how exciting it is to see many of these titles starting to now pop up in the Christian fiction genre.

This particular title was one I had been anticipating ever since it's release, and I recently finally got the chance to go ahead and read it.

I hope you'll all join me down below for today's full review.

Dust by Kara Swanson:

Synopsis:

The truth about Neverland is far more dangerous than a fairy tale.

Claire Kenton believes the world is too dark for magic to be real—since her twin brother was stolen away as a child. Now Claire's desperate search points to London... and a boy who shouldn't exist.

Peter Pan is having a beastly time getting back to Neverland. Grounded in London and hunted by his own Lost Boys, Peter searches for the last hope of restoring his crumbling island: a lass with magic in her veins.

The girl who fears her own destiny is on a collision course with the boy who never wanted to grow up. The truth behind this fairy tale is about to unravel everything Claire thought she knew about Peter Pan—and herself.

My Review:

Dust is a title that I'd been anticipating reading ever since it's release, and I finally got around to doing so. While I had many expectations going into it, it ended up being nothing like any of them. I can wholeheartedly state that author Kara Swanson does justice to this beloved classic tale, and the beautiful cover is definitely indicative of the wonderful story contained within.

Dust is a somewhat darker and more mature retelling of the beloved children's classic, Peter Pan, and it's an emotional and heart wrenching story that tackles the story of the boy who never wanted to grow up finding himself in a world where he has no choice to do so. Claire is our other main character, and she's always hated the magical abilities that she's been cursed with and never understood why. When her brother goes missing, sources seem to point to a connection between her brother's favorite childhood storybook and his sudden disappearance. When she travels to London to find things out for herself, she's ill prepared for the strange circumstances she's found herself landed right in. However, somewhere in the magical and unbelievable circumstances she's living, there must be a way that will lead her to the truth and to the brother she's desperately missing.

Told in dual POV's between Claire and Peter, this is a story I wasn't honestly prepared for just how much it would touch my heart, and I can't recommend it enough. I loved getting a closer look at what made Peter want to never grow up in the first place, and obvious notion that all magic can be used for good or for evil depending on the intention.

If you're a fan of the classic story and/or a fan of clean young adult fantasy, then this might just be the story for you.

My only complaints were the fact that I found the initial part of the story to be a bit on the slow moving side, and the fact that I wasn't expecting the story to conclude the way it did. Overall though, this one was definitely a winner in my eyes, and I can't wait to read the second book in the very near future.

Final Rating: 4/5.

Thanks so much for reading guys! Have a great rest of your day :)

I also hope to have lots of time to curl up with some great reads, and I recently had a chance to read one of my most anticipated 2023 releases! Earlier in the year, I read my first novel by Susannah B. Lewis, and I couldn't have loved it more. It was definitely one of my favorite reads of this entire year, and I've been looking forward to reading her next release ever since. First Line Friday: All's Fair in Love and Cupcakes

Happy Friday Everyone :) I hope you've all had a great week, and that you're looking forward to the weekend. Today I'm excited to once again be linking up with Hoarding Books for First Line Friday. First Line Friday is one of my favorite weekly memes, and it simply consists of sharing the first line of the book you're currently reading. I've had a lot of extra reading time on my hands lately because of all the social distancing, and as such, I've been able to read a lot of the titles that have been sitting on my shelves for quite some time. Today's book is one of such titles, and I'm happy that I finally found the time to get to it as I'm really enjoying it so far. All's Fair in Love and Cupcakes by Betsy St. Amant: About the Book: Kat inspected rows of the same old cupcakes. They seemed to blink back at her, as if they knew she was capable of so much more. Kat Varland has had enough of chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. At twenty-six years old...
