Defiance by C.J. Redwine

 Good Morning Sweet Friends :)

I pray today finds you all doing well, and I'm so thankful you've taken the time to drop on by The Preppy Book Princess today for another book review.

I'm Kirby, and I'm thrilled you're here! I've been book blogging here on The Preppy Book Princess since September of 2015, and I love getting to share all about the great and perhaps some not so great books I read on a daily basis with you all.

I used to be someone who purchased a ton of books, (especially around the time I first discovered Book Outlet), and I've amassed quite a large collection over the years. In recent years, I've slowed down my book buying, and I've also grown a lot fussier about the type of content I allow myself to read.

However, I still have a lot of backlist titles sitting in my home library that I hadn't ever gotten around to reading, and while I did clear out anything I thought that would be too inappropriate for me to be reading, I'm still attempting to work my way through many of the remaining titles.

Today's review is going to be for one of these titles that had been sitting on my shelves for quite some time, and I hope you'll all keep reading down below to find out what I ended up thinking about it.

Defiance by C.J. Redwine:

Source: Gift From My Hubby

Publisher: Balzer and Bray

Publication Date: August 28th, 2012

Genre: Young Adult Fiction/Fantasy/Dystopian

Series: Defiance

Synopsis:

While the other girls in the walled city-state of Baalboden learn to sew and dance, Rachel Adams learns to track and hunt. While they bend like reeds to the will of their male Protectors, she uses hers for sparring practice.

When Rachel's father fails to return from a courier mission and is declared dead, the city's brutal Commander assigns Rachel a new Protector: her father's apprentice, Logan—the boy she declared her love to and who turned her down two years before. Left with nothing but fierce belief in her father's survival, Rachel decides to escape and find him herself.

As Rachel and Logan battle their way through the Wasteland, stalked by a monster that can't be killed and an army of assassins out for blood, they discover romance, heartbreak, and a truth that will incite a war decades in the making.

My Review:

This particular title had been sitting on my bookshelves for what felt like forever, and I finally got the chance to give it a try. I'd heard such great things about it going into it, and I was honestly expecting great things. Unfortunately, that ended up not being the case, and I don't foresee myself wanting to continue on with the rest of the series. I will say that perhaps if I had read this one back when it released and I was more into dystopian and fantasy novels, I might have felt differently. However, reading it now I felt like it was a story that was hard to get into, and both of the main characters were extremely obnoxious.

Rachel was supposed to be your typical strong female protagonist, but she took it too far. So many circumstances that end up happening wouldn't have happened if she could have ever taken some one else's advice, instead of rushing into situations without being properly prepared, and leaving someone else to deal with the consequences. Likewise, Logan is supposed to be your typical protective male protagonist, but he was extremely unlikeable, and I often wanted to roll my eyes at his reaction to the situations he finds himself in.

The romance felt extremely insta lovey, the plot was muddled and fast moving while still managing to be lackluster and kind of boring, and it took me forever to want to finish this one.

I have no inclination to want to finish this series, but I may perhaps give another series a try by this author in the future.

Overall, I think there are much better dystopian and fantasy novels on the market, and I would personally recommend passing over this one.

Final Rating: 1/5.

Thanks so much for reading guys! Have a great rest of your day :)

This is not a sponsored post. All thoughts and opinions are my own, and this is my honest review.

Della and Darby by Susannah B. Lewis Review

Happy Monday Friends :) I pray today finds you all doing well, and I'm so thankful you decided to stop by my little corner of the internet. My husband and I actually have this week off of work for a much needed holiday, and I'm excited for the many fun things we have planned. Aside from the fun things, I'm honestly thankful to have some extra time to get my house back in shape, and to get more organized for Christmas. I also hope to have lots of time to curl up with some great reads, and I recently had a chance to read one of my most anticipated 2023 releases! Earlier in the year, I read my first novel by Susannah B. Lewis, and I couldn't have loved it more. It was definitely one of my favorite reads of this entire year, and I've been looking forward to reading her next release ever since. If you'd like to check out that review, you can do so using the link below: Bless Your Heart Rae Sutton Otherwise, keep on reading down below for today's full review. De...

First Line Friday: Courting Mr. Emerson

Happy Friday Everyone :) Since it is Friday, I'll once again be participating in First Line Friday which is hosted by Hoarding Books .  For this week, I'm going to be sharing the first line from Melody Carlson's newest book, Courting Mr. Emerson. About The Book: When the fun-loving and spontaneous artist Willow West meets buttoned-up, retired English teacher George Emerson, it's not exactly love at first sight. Though she does find the obsessive-compulsive man intriguing. Making it her mission to get him to loosen up and embrace life, she embarks on what seems like a lost cause--and finds herself falling for him in the process. A confirmed bachelor, George vacillates between irritation and attraction whenever Willow is around--which to him seems like all too often. He's not interested in expanding his horizons or making new friends; it just hurts too much when you lose them. But as the summer progresses, George feels his defenses crumbling. The quest...
