Greenglass House by Kate Milford Review

Hello Everyone :)

I hope you're all doing well, and I want to thank you for taking the time to join me for another book review here on The Preppy Book Princess.

I've so far finished fourteen books in 2020, and I'm especially excited to review one of my most recent reads for you all today.

This particular novel was the perfect choice to read during the colder winter days, and I only wish I'd gotten it a little closer to Christmas. Oh well, it still fit to read it during the first few days of the year, and it was awesome to get to immerse myself in such a fun, middle grade story.

Greenglass House by Kate Milford:

Source: Library

Publisher: Clarion Books

Publication Date: August 26th, 2014

Genre: Middle Grade/Adventure

Series: Greenglass House

Synopsis:

It’s wintertime at Greenglass House. The creaky smuggler’s inn is always quiet during this season, and twelve-year-old Milo, the innkeepers’ adopted son, plans to spend his holidays relaxing. But on the first icy night of vacation, out of nowhere, the guest bell rings. Then rings again. And again. Soon Milo’s home is bursting with odd, secretive guests, each one bearing a strange story that is somehow connected to the rambling old house. As objects go missing and tempers flare, Milo and Meddy, the cook’s daughter, must decipher clues and untangle the web of deepening mysteries to discover the truth about Greenglass House—and themselves.

My Review:

I've always enjoyed stories about old houses surrounded in mystery, but after finishing Greenglass House, this trope has worked its way up even higher on my favorites list. This charming story is truly unlike anything I've ever read before, and is the perfect choice for a fun, wintery themed read.

All Milo wanted was a quiet winter break. With his parent's hotel, life is often busy and unpredictable during the rest of the year, so winter break is his one chance to kick back and relax. Fate has other plans this year however, when soon Greenglass House is filled with strange and secretive guests, who all seem to have their own personal agendas. Milo is determined to get to the bottom of everything going on in his beloved home. With the help of Meddy, the cook's daughter, they'll do whatever it takes to find out who's behind the sinister happenings plaguing Greenglass House this holiday season.

This was truly a delightful middle grade read, and I loved how atmospheric the entire plot is. I honestly wish Greenglass House was a real place, as I would love to stay here. The characters were all developed fairly well, and I especially loved the friendship that blooms between Milo and Meddy, and the amazing relationship that Milo has with his parent's. Milo's adoption is mentioned several times throughout the story, but it's always done in a way that showcases how much his parent's love him, and respect his growing curiosity about his heritage.

This was my first experience with a Kate Milford novel, and I really enjoyed her writing style. The foreshadowing is beautiful, and I loved how much detail goes into every aspect of the setting. Without spoiling anything, I also have to comment on how impressed I was with the big plot twist, and the fact that I never saw it coming. With how many books I read each year, I'm always impressed when an author can take me that much by surprise.

All in all, Greenglass House is a fun, whimsical read that I highly enjoyed. I appreciated how it has a light hearted feel to it, but that it does dive into a few serious issues so it doesn't end up feeling like a fluffy read. I think this is the perfect choice for middle schoolers, but has enough substance within it to also satisfy any adult reader that decides to pick it up.

I'm very much looking forward to continuing on with this series in the near future.

Final Rating: 4/5

Thanks so much for reading guys! Have a great rest of your day :)
