Happy Top 5 Wednesday Guys!
If you're unfamiliar with Top 5 Wednesday, it's a weekly meme that was created by gingerreadslainey on Youtube, and is now moderated by Sam from Thoughts On Tomes on Youtube as well. The group communicates through goodreads, and here's the link if you're interested in learning more about it!
Today's topic is: "Book Trends You're Tired Of: What are some things you are tired of seeing that are trends in publishing? Maybe something that pops up on a lot of covers these days, or the popularity of certain tropes in a particular genre? Let it out!
I'm mainly going to be focusing on tropes, as there's been a lot lately that I've been feeling annoyed over, and these are my top 5:
1) Insta-Love: This lately seems to a popular trope in every genre I read, and I really can't stand it. There's nothing wrong with instant intrigue or attraction, but when the reader is supposed to believe that characters fall head over heels for each after their first encounter, or their first date, it becomes massively unbelievable, and in many books, I find it almost cringe worthy.
2) Abusive or Controlling Tendencies Being Marketed As Romantic: This seems to once again be a popular trope in all genres I read lately, but I'm especially noticing it in New Adult books. In my opinion, it's extremely dangerous the way that fiction glamorizes this subject, especially when you're dealing with younger teenage readers. I have no clue why anyone would want to consider these tendencies as romantic, and it's honestly kind of mind boggling for me.
3) Good Girl Falling For The Bad Boy: I'm not going to lie, I'm a huge fan of these type of novels generally, but sometimes it gets to a point where I'd love to see one book romance that doesn't have this type of focus. Too much of a good thing isn't necessarily a good thing, and while I'll definitely continue to read these romances since I love them, I'd also love to see a different romance trope for a refreshing change.
4) The Cover Model Not Matching The Book Character's Description: This has always been a trend that I've found extremely annoying. I'll be reading a book where the main character is described as dark haired and curvy, and it's a thin blue eyed blond model on the cover. While I understand that often cover models are not going to match the description the reader has developed in their mind, it would be nice if they at least tried to make the cover models have some of the same physical characteristics that the author describes in their story.
5) Absent Parents: For my last pick, I'm going with the trope in YA fiction of absentee parents. Why is it so common in YA that parent's are either absent from the picture, or completely uninvolved in their kid's lives? I understand this to be the case sometimes, but it gets tiring when each and every YA novel you pick up includes a case of this. I personally find it so refreshing when you find a book where the main character has a great relationship with at least one of their parents, like Whatever Life Throws At You by Julie Cross!
Those are the 5 book trends I'm tired of guys! Thanks so much for reading, and I'd love to hear which book trends you guys are all tired of as well. :)
I'll see you all again on Friday for my January 2016 Book Haul Post!
