Waking In Time by Angie Stanton Review

Happy Monday Guys :)

How was everyone's weekend?

Mine was rough to say the least, as I was dealing with some flareups from health issues, and such, and I'm definitely ready to see the start of a new week.

Probably the best part of my weekend (other than finishing some amazing books!) was Disney announcing opening dates for Pandora, Rivers of Light, and Happily Ever After at Disney World, and a new Beauty and The Beast Musical on the Disney Dream Cruise ship!

Right now we don't have another trip in the works as we both have some big changes coming up with work, and we're also trying to pay down a bunch of our debt, as I've mentioned in previous posts. However, I think we're both still hoping there's a Disney vacation in our future this year, and I'll definitely keep you guys updated if that's the case!

Today on this snowy chilly day in my hometown, I want to share a review with you guys for Waking In Time by Angie Stanton. I was so excited when I got approved by Netgalley to advance read this one, as I love Angie Stanton's novels, and this one sounded so different from what she usually writes.

I received an advance reader copy of this novel from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are one hundred percent my own.

Synopsis:

Still mourning the loss of her beloved grandmother and shaken by her mysterious, dying request to "find the baby," Abbi has just arrived at UW Madison for her freshman year. But on her second day, she wakes up to a different world: 1983. That is just the first stop on Abbi's backwards journey through time. Will is a charming college freshman from 1927 who travels forward through time. When Abbi and Will meet in the middle, love adds another complication to their lives. Communication across time through a buried time capsule, they try to decode the mystery of their travel, find the lost baby, and plead with their champion, a kindly physics professor, to help them find each other again....even though the professor gets younger each time Abbi meets him. This page-turning story full of romance, twists, and delightful details about campus life then and now will stay with reader's long after the book's satisfying end.

My Review:

Time Travel books are often a tricky concept for authors to pull off. I've read a lot of them, being that it's one of my favorite tropes, and yet there's been a lot that left me highly underwhelmed, and confused. I'm happy to say that that was not the case with Waking In Time. This YA novel tells the story of Abbi, a college freshman at UW Madison, who's recently lost her beloved grandmother, and hopes that attending the same college she did and staying in the same dorm will bring her closer to her. She doesn't expect this to be taken literally though, and she's quite shocked and confused when on her second day at college she wakes up in 1983! It's only going to get weirder for Abbi from this point on, as she continues travelling back further and further in time, connects with ancestors who would never believe who she truly is, and starts to fall in love with a fellow time traveler, Will.

Abbi's character was one I actually really enjoyed. She's scared to death not knowing what's causing her time travel phenomenon, but she also takes steps that are often quite risky to figure out what's causing it. I wasn't expecting to like Will's part in the story, as I'd heard a lot of reviewers say the romance felt like "insta-love" which everyone knows I'm not a fan of. However, I didn't get that impression actually, and I thought the romance really added another depth to the story, and it was interesting seeing how they interacted over various time periods when one wouldn't remember the other, and vice versa.

The plot twist about "finding the baby" was actually my favorite part of the whole book, and it pleasantly surprised me the way that it all wrapped up. I hadn't pieced together where Angie Stanton was going to take that particular story line, and I love when that ends up happening. I was also perfectly content with how everything's wrapped up at the end, and overall, this book left me with a big smile on my face, and a desire to pick up even more Angie Stanton books in the future.

I can definitely say that this is my favorite book by Angie Stanton I've read so far, and I give it four out of five stars. It's definitely different from anything she's written before, and I highly recommend it to anyone who's a fan of time travel novels, or anyone who's a fan of YA contemporary novels.

Thanks again to Netgalley for the chance to have read this!

I thank you guys for reading, and I'll see you back here soon. :)

First Line Friday: Courting Mr. Emerson

Happy Friday Everyone :) Since it is Friday, I'll once again be participating in First Line Friday which is hosted by Hoarding Books .  For this week, I'm going to be sharing the first line from Melody Carlson's newest book, Courting Mr. Emerson. About The Book: When the fun-loving and spontaneous artist Willow West meets buttoned-up, retired English teacher George Emerson, it's not exactly love at first sight. Though she does find the obsessive-compulsive man intriguing. Making it her mission to get him to loosen up and embrace life, she embarks on what seems like a lost cause--and finds herself falling for him in the process. A confirmed bachelor, George vacillates between irritation and attraction whenever Willow is around--which to him seems like all too often. He's not interested in expanding his horizons or making new friends; it just hurts too much when you lose them. But as the summer progresses, George feels his defenses crumbling. The quest...

First Line Friday: The Inheritance

Happy Friday Everyone :) I hope you're all had a great week and that you're staying safe no matter where you are. I haven't been leaving my house much lately other than for work, and because of this, I've had lots of reading time on my hands. Last year my hubby and I took a road trip that included a visit to our favorite bookstore, and we decided to each pick a book that wouldn't be our first choice. The purpose was to try and read something that still interested us, but would maybe be a bit different than what we would typically go for first. My pick ended up being The Inheritance by Michael Phillips, a book I actually ended up being quite excited about, despite never having heard of it prior. Unfortunately, it ended up sitting on my bookshelf ever since, and I'm so thankful I finally got the opportunity to pick it up and start reading it this past week. The Inheritance by Michael Phillips: About the Book: The death of the clan patriarch h...
